Product Description
The MQ-3 is a gas sensor for detecting alcohol vapors. Its core component is a heated metal oxide semiconductor element whose resistance changes in the presence of alcohol vapor. This change in resistance is converted into a change in the output voltage, which can be read using a simple ADC converter on a microcontroller board.
The sensor requires an operating voltage of 5 V. After switching it on, allow a warm-up period of approximately three minutes before reliable readings are available. The measuring range covers 0.04 to 4 mg/L, which is sufficient for breath alcohol tests and air monitoring in vehicles and enclosed spaces. In everyday projects, such sensors can be used as part of a breath alcohol warning system or as a component of an air quality monitor that also detects alcohol vapors.
Operation requires a 5 V power supply module and a microcontroller with an analog input. If the available voltage source is below 5 V, it must be stepped up; when operating with 3.3 V systems, a booster is required.
