Product description
The MQ-7 is a semiconductor sensor for detecting carbon monoxide in ambient air. The sensor element changes its electrical resistance proportionally to the CO concentration, which is then output as a voltage signal via the analog output. This continuous measurement enables monitoring of CO concentrations up to 2000 ppm with a response time under 90 seconds.
The sensor requires an operating voltage of 5 V and an integrated heating element that brings the measuring resistor to the optimum temperature. The voltage signal can be connected directly to an analog input on microcontroller boards such as Arduino or similar systems. Calibration in fresh air is required before initial operation for measurements.
Typical applications include monitoring CO emissions in garages, monitoring combustion processes in laboratory setups, and integration into portable warning devices for craft workspaces. The sensor is also used in prototypes of environmental monitoring systems.
The sensor's response depends on ambient temperature; measurements outside an ambient temperature range of 0 to 50 °C are unreliable. Accurate CO measurement requires a calibration unit or a known reference gas. Since carbon monoxide itself is highly toxic, tests with actual CO concentrations must be carried out only in specialized laboratories.
Safety information
Carbon monoxide is highly toxic; experiments with actual CO sources may be conducted only in suitable laboratory environments. This sensor is intended exclusively for prototyping, testing, and development purposes, not for installation in residential systems or operation as an approved safety device. If you have questions about functional testing or integration into existing systems, consult a qualified electrician before commissioning.
