Product description
This semiconductor gas sensor detects methane and other combustible gases such as propane or butane by measuring changes in the resistance of a metal oxide element. The sensor is suitable for simple warning circuits and gas monitoring in prototypes and development projects.
The sensor core changes its electrical resistance when exposed to gas, producing an analog voltage signal. The signal can be fed directly to an analog-to-digital converter or converted into a digital switching signal via the integrated comparator. The gas concentration can be read in real time without requiring complex calibration.
Applications include methane leak warnings in laboratory setups, safety switches for gas appliances in test setups, or fast gas sensors for mobile measurement prototypes. A typical project could automatically shut off a gas flame when a threshold is exceeded by simply switching the comparator output to a relay or solenoid.
The sensor requires a constant operating voltage of 5 V. The measured values are relative and require project-specific adjustment against a reference standard because the sensor core is subject to aging. After approximately one to two years, a measurably faster increase in resistance occurs, making replacement necessary.
