Description

Product Overview

  • Infrared thermal imaging camera with an 8*8-pixel sensor for temperature measurement
  • Measuring range: −20 to +80 °C
  • Digital I2C interface; multiple modules can be connected to one bus
  • Integrated thermopile sensor with no need for external calibration
  • Operating voltage: 3.3 V

Product Description

The infrared thermal imaging sensor measures the temperature distribution of a scene without contact using its 64 individually addressable measurement points. The thermopile sensor eliminates the need for external calibration. Measurements are taken via the I2C interface, which allows multiple modules to operate in parallel on the same bus using just two data lines.

The device uses 3.3 V logic and requires a level shifter when controlled by 5 V boards. The small 8*8-pixel sensor array prioritizes temperature resolution over spatial detail, but is sufficient for distinguishing warm and cold zones. The resolution is around 0.5 °C.

Potential applications include monitoring heat from small machines, detecting movement through thermal radiation, assessing material properties through temperature measurements, and conducting energy audits on enclosures and contact points. In heating system monitoring, it can be used to check the condition of heating surfaces without having to lie next to them.

Operation requires a microcontroller with I2C master functionality and a 3.3 V supply. To evaluate the 64 measurements per scan, the firmware must convert the sensor data into a temperature map. High-resolution, real-time thermal images are not possible with this sensor.

Safety Notice

The sensor is not intended for installation in household electrical systems. Use is limited to prototype construction and development purposes. Observe the 3.3 V operating voltage; consult a qualified electrician when connecting to higher voltage levels.
