Product description
This alphanumeric LCD display shows text on two lines with 40 characters each. The HD44780-compatible controller controls the pixels, while an external microcontroller transmits the data via a parallel interface. The display can operate either in 8-bit mode using all data lines or in 4-bit mode, which requires only four data lines and therefore saves microcontroller pins.
The connections are arranged on a 16-pin header. In addition to the power supply and control lines for register selection, read/write direction, and the enable signal, two additional pins connect to the green backlight (anode and cathode). A potentiometer connected to an additional contrast pin adjusts the display brightness to the viewing angle and ambient light.
The display is suitable for projects with multiline text output, such as displaying sensor readings, outputting status information during program execution, or implementing simple menus in educational projects.
A microcontroller board with at least four to eight available I/O pins and the LiquidCrystal library for control are required. The potentiometer for contrast adjustment must be wired externally. The backlight requires a separate power supply or a series resistor if the current load would exceed the capacity of the controller board.
Safety information
The display is intended exclusively for prototyping and testing and development purposes. The 5 V operating voltage must be supplied by a suitable laboratory power supply isolated from the mains or by a battery-powered development board. Consult a qualified electrician when working on the power supply or if anything is unclear before commissioning.
