Product Description
The infrared distance sensor uses the time-of-flight principle to detect distances without contact. An integrated infrared emitter sends out pulsed light, which is reflected by objects. The detector receives the returning signal, and the electronics evaluate the time of flight to calculate the distance and output it as a voltage value.
The sensor covers distances between 4 and 50 cm, which clearly defines its range of applications. It cannot detect closer measurements or objects beyond this range. The analog 0-to-5-volt output allows direct connection to analog inputs on microcontroller boards. An analog comparator or an ADC board can then convert the readings into digital values. The sensor requires no external calibration and provides usable readings continuously as soon as it is switched on.
Typical applications include object detection, for example, checking whether an object is present in a certain area or approaching. A mobile robot could use it to avoid obstacles in its path, or a prototype for an automatic window could use it to detect rain. Distance warnings in smart shelves or storage systems also benefit from its compact design and direct measurement output.
The module requires an external power supply of exactly 5 volts. It cannot be connected to 3.3-volt boards without a level shifter. Processing the analog values also requires either a board with an integrated ADC or a separate analog-to-digital converter.
