Product description
The laser time-of-flight sensor detects distances and gestures using infrared light. An optical measuring system emits pulsed light and measures the time it takes to reach the object and return, enabling millimeter-precise distance measurements up to a range of 10 centimeters. The high measurement rate of up to 100 readings per second also enables the detection of fast movement patterns.
Since the module operates on an I2C bus, multiple sensors can be connected in parallel to the same controller board without using up additional connections. The low operating voltage of 2.8 to 3.6 volts is required for operation. If the module is used with a 5-volt board, a level shifter is required between the sensor and controller to match the logic levels. Power consumption remains low even under load.
Typical applications include gesture-controlled user interfaces for music systems, lamps, or display panels. Another area is proximity detection in robotics prototyping or machine protection circuits; the 10-centimeter range is often sufficient to warn of objects near mechanical parts. The module can also be used as a room air quality testing device by monitoring movement profiles in defined zones.
A microcontroller with I2C support is required for commissioning. The operating voltage must comply with the sensor specification of 2.8 to 3.6 volts; 5-volt systems require a level shifter on the I2C bus. The footprint of approximately 4.8 by 2.4 millimeters allows soldering only; no connectors are provided.
Safety notice
The sensor's infrared LED can damage sensitive eyes; do not look directly into it. The module is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes and is not suitable for installation in household electrical circuits. If there is any uncertainty about commissioning, a qualified electrician must be consulted before assembly.
