Product Description
The infrared line follower measures reflections at close range and enables robots or autonomous vehicles to follow marked lines. The module consists of three sensors that detect differences in brightness between dark lines and the lighter surroundings, each providing independent digital signals. This makes directional correction possible: if only the outer left sensor is triggered, the line has deviated to the left.
The infrared LED emits light that is reflected by the surface. A photodetector measures this reflection for each sensor and compares it with a threshold value. This makes it possible to represent positions with different sensitivities on the same module. Each sensor is calibrated separately to respond to different surface colors and lighting conditions.
Typical applications include autonomous robots that follow straight or curved lines on dark surfaces in laboratories or classrooms. A line-following robot with drive motors can navigate courses only a few centimeters wide. In industrial contexts, the three sensors also help vehicles follow predefined routes in warehouses or production halls. These modules are likewise used in line-following experiments, where the microcontroller's algorithm must independently handle sensor signals from lines of varying widths.
Operation requires 5 V DC. Connection is made via the module's pins directly to a robot controller or a microcontroller board with compatible digital inputs. The three outputs can be connected in parallel to a bus or evaluated individually. For optimal results, the sensor surface should be free of dirt and positioned approximately 5 to 25 mm above the surface.
Safety Notice
The module is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes and is not designed for integration into the household power circuit. Since it operates at low voltages, it does not pose an immediate risk of electric shock; nevertheless, soldering and connection work must be carried out properly.
