Frequently asked questions about 3D printing and lasers
Which nozzle do I need for my 3D printer?
The standard size is 0.4 mm — a good compromise between speed and detail. Use 0.2 mm for fine parts and 0.6 or 0.8 mm for fast, sturdy prints. The material matters: brass nozzles are fine for PLA and PETG, but for filled filaments with carbon or glass you need hardened steel, otherwise the nozzle wears out in no time.
Which build plate suits which filament?
PLA adheres well to smooth PEI plates. PETG tends to stick too firmly — a textured plate or a release agent helps here. TPU needs a surface with good adhesion that is still flexible. A coated spring steel plate covers most cases.
Which filament is best for what?
PLA for almost everything: easy to print, little odor, ideal for schools and beginners. PETG when the part needs to be sturdier and more heat-resistant. TPU for flexible parts such as seals or tires. ABS only with an enclosed build chamber and fume extraction.
Which xTool laser is right for me?
The P series is an enclosed CO2 laser for wood, acrylic and leather — good for schools because it’s enclosed and can be connected to extraction. The S series uses a diode laser and is more affordable to get started with. The M series and MetalFab are geared toward metal engraving. What matters is the material, the work area and whether the machine needs to be enclosed.
How much does a 3D printer cost?
Entry-level machines with a 220 x 220 mm build volume cost around €200 to €300. Larger build volumes from 300 x 300 mm cost €300 to €500, with special machines such as resin or belt printers above that. For schools, factor in filament, spare nozzles and fume extraction as well.
Which acrylic is suitable for a laser cutter?
Cast acrylic (GS) cuts cleanly and engraves a frosted white — it’s the first choice for laser cutters. Extruded acrylic (XT) also cuts, but engraves less well. Polycarbonate doesn’t belong in a laser: it burns and releases irritant gases.
