Product description
An addressable RGB LED allows each element to be controlled individually without an additional multiplexing circuit. The control chip is built directly into the SMD package and responds to commands transmitted serially via a single data pin. This makes it possible to set the color and brightness of each LED independently.
The data protocol uses pulse-width encoding, where signal durations between 0.3 and 0.9 microseconds represent the bits 0 and 1. Data is transmitted at a minimum of 400 kHz. This means that control via microcontroller boards requires precise timing and cannot tolerate significant delays in signal generation.
Multiple LEDs are connected in sequence by connecting the output signal of the first LED to the input signal of the next. This allows up to 100 or more elements to be operated from a single GPIO pin, without the need for additional connections or driver circuits. Typical applications range from illuminated indicators and programmable strips to matrix displays for visual effects in art installations or gaming projects.
The operating voltage must be stable at 5 V. At maximum brightness with white selected, each LED draws up to 60 mA, so longer chains require an external power supply with sufficient capacity. The 5 V logic levels are compatible with development boards that also operate at 5 V; a level shifter is required for 3.3 V systems.
Safety notice
This product is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes. A continuous current load of more than 60 mA per LED can cause the package to overheat; brightness should be limited during extended operation or at high ambient temperatures. Not intended for installation in household electrical wiring.
