Product Description
A Peltier element uses the thermoelectric effect. When direct current passes through the semiconductor elements, temperature differences form across the two ceramic surfaces. Depending on the direction of the current, one side cools while the other heats up. This element can produce temperature differences of up to 70 K when the heat-rejecting side is effectively cooled.
At 12 V and a rated current of 15.4 A, the element delivers 142 W of cooling capacity on the cold side. However, efficiency decreases as you approach the maximum values and as the temperature differential increases. Carefully sizing the heat dissipation on the hot side (for example, using heat sinks and fans) determines whether the desired temperature gradients can be achieved.
Applications include situations where compact active cooling or temperature control without moving parts is needed. Portable coolers for drinks or medication, stabilizing sensor temperatures in laboratory setups, or small-format temperature chambers can all be built with this element. Targeted heating is also possible by reversing the current direction.
A regulated 12 V power supply with a capacity of at least 16 A is required (to account for startup currents). Achieving noticeable cooling requires heat-transfer components such as copper blocks, thermal interface materials, and liquid cooling circuits or fans. The element itself is mechanically fragile and must not be bent or twisted.
Safety Notice
The Peltier element is not intended for connection to household mains and is solely for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes. Its high current draw requires a safe power supply and wiring with an appropriate wire gauge; consult a qualified electrician when sizing the setup. Contact with the cold side during operation can quickly cause frostbite, so protective measures are necessary.
