Product description
A soil moisture sensor determines the moisture level in the soil and outputs the measured value as a voltage signal. Its operating principle is based on the change in electrical conductivity between two electrodes when water enters the soil's pore space. The analog output level can be connected directly to the analog input socket of a microcontroller board or an analog-to-digital converter.
The measurement range of 0 to 100 percent soil moisture covers both dry soils and temporarily waterlogged conditions. Calibration is performed in software using two reference points: one measurement in a dry state and one in saturated soil. The module then provides values that can be converted directly into moisture levels.
Typical applications include irrigation control for potted plants or garden beds, as well as soil monitoring in greenhouses and field trials. The elongated probe can be inserted to any depth and reliably measures whether a substrate still has moisture reserves or needs watering. The module is also suitable for moisture loggers used in research projects.
The sensor requires a supply voltage between 3.3 and 5 volts for operation; depending on the microcontroller board used, level shifting may be necessary. Recalibration may be advisable, particularly after extended storage. The module is intended exclusively for outdoor or protected vegetation areas and is not suitable for saline soils or extreme, continuous waterlogging.
