Product description
The NE555 is a versatile timer IC that generates pulses, controls timing sequences, or compares voltages. The DIP-8 package fits directly into breadboards and prototyping boards. With an operating voltage between 4.5 and 16 V, the device works flexibly with both battery voltages and typical laboratory power supply voltages.
The circuit behavior is defined by external resistors and capacitors. In astable operation, the IC independently generates square-wave pulses whose frequency and duty cycle can be adjusted. The monostable mode is available for time-delayed sequences, in which an input pulse triggers a defined output pulse width. The output current of up to 200 mA is sufficient for many applications, but an additional driver stage is required for motors or multiple LEDs in series.
Typical applications include electronic metronomes, flashing-light circuits, pulse-width modulation for stabilizing LED brightness, and acoustic warning signals. The timer is also suitable as a voltage-controlled oscillator or for generating variable delay times. In education and hobby electronics projects, the NE555 is a classic because its behavior is easy to understand and can be modified using external components.
The IC requires decoupling capacitors close to the supply pins and a stable power supply connection. For precise timing, the external resistors and capacitors must have low tolerances. The maximum output current limits direct control of heavy loads.
