Product description
This CAN bus converter converts serial communication from the SPI standard to the CAN protocol. The MCP2515 IC handles protocol conversion, while the TJA1050 transceiver buffers the voltage levels between the microcontroller and the CAN line. The module operates at 5 V and requires only four signal lines (clock, data in, data out, chip select) for the SPI connection.
The CAN bus is suitable for systems that need to connect multiple devices reliably over longer distances. In vehicle projects, the module enables connection to engine control units or sensor networks; in industrial applications, it connects distributed measuring stations or actuator modules. CAN is also used in smart home systems with real-time-critical requirements.
The converter is connected to a free SPI port on the microcontroller board. The function of each pin can be identified from the connection labels on the board. A 5 V power source is sufficient; in addition, the two CAN lines (High and Low) must be connected to the corresponding CAN network. Software libraries for common controllers and development environments are freely available.
