Product description
The LM317 is an adjustable linear voltage regulator that generates stable, lower output voltages from higher input voltages. With two external resistors, the output voltage can be adjusted from 1.2 V to 37 V, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
The regulator operates on the principle of series regulation. An internal transistor limits the voltage drop between the input and output. In the event of an overload or heat buildup, the regulator switches off automatically to protect the component. Calibration is not required. However, the input voltage must be at least 2.5 V higher than the desired output voltage, and the full current delivery of 1.5 A is only possible if the heat loss is dissipated using a heat sink.
Typical applications include laboratory power supplies with adjustable outputs, power supplies for analog circuits with different voltage requirements, and charging circuits for batteries with a defined charging current. The LM317 is also frequently used as a voltage reference in measurement chains.
An input voltage between 3 V and 40 V is required for operation. A heat sink is required when supplying higher currents or operating close to the maximum input voltage. Discharge resistors at the output protect the regulator when switching off inductive loads.
