Product Description
A color sensor based on the TCS principle detects the intensity of the red, green, and blue components of an illuminated surface and outputs the measured values digitally. The GY-33 module uses the I2C interface, allowing multiple modules to be connected in parallel without requiring additional connection lines. The voltage can be either 3.3 V or 5 V, and the module works reliably with both logic levels.
The sensor measures reflection, meaning it only responds to the light that is reflected back from a surface. An integrated IR filter suppresses infrared radiation that could distort the measured values. The 16 color channels enable fine-grained detection of color gradations. Digital measured values are available directly from the module, and calibration is not required.
Applications range from material sorting, such as separating different plastic colors, to lighting control and color value detection in laboratories and prototypes. RGB detection is also used in autonomous vehicles to identify road markings or traffic lights. The sensor only measures reliably at short distances; it is not designed for large-area color control over several meters.
Connection requires only four wires (power, ground, SDA, SCL). A microcontroller with an I2C port and a control library are required. For operation with 3.3 V boards, the 5 V power supply can be provided separately; with 5 V boards, both power supplies can be combined. The respective microcontroller datasheets specify the requirements.
