Product Description
The BC549B is a bipolar PNP transistor in a compact package. It switches smaller loads such as LEDs, relay coils, or motors using a control signal from digital outputs, such as a microcontroller board, with voltages up to 30 V.
The PNP switching principle operates based on the current-voltage relationship between the base and emitter. The small control current at the base pin controls the significantly larger current between the emitter and collector. This makes it possible to switch high voltage and current levels using weak control signals.
In practice, the transistor is used in digital circuits, for example to activate an external relay with a GPIO pin of a microcontroller board or to control multiple LEDs that consume more current than the output pin can supply directly. It is also used as a switching stage in analog audio circuits or current-source designs.
The base requires a series resistor between the control signal and the transistor pin to limit the base current. The power dissipation of 0.5 W limits the maximum continuous load; at higher current loads, the duty cycle must be limited or an active heat sink must be used. The transistor is designed for operating voltages up to 30 V and does not require an intermediate switching module for higher voltages.
