Product description
A four-digit 7-segment display shows decimal numbers and some special characters using individually switchable light-emitting diodes. Each of the four digits consists of seven segments plus a decimal point; therefore, up to 29 LED positions must be controlled in total. This display uses a common-cathode topology, in which all cathodes of a digit are connected together.
There are two ways to drive the display. Either all 29 lines are controlled individually by the microcontroller, which requires many pins, or a decoder IC handles the logic and saves connections. In multiplexing mode, the four digits are activated one after another and fed the corresponding segment data; this happens so quickly that the human eye perceives all four digits as lit simultaneously. As a result, the average current consumption is significantly lower than the sum of the individual values.
Applications include simple measuring devices such as frequency counters or thermometers, clocks with displays accurate to the second, and data loggers with live displays. A control unit can use it to display the current measured value or error codes without requiring a serial connection to a separate terminal. The display requires only a 5 V operating voltage, fits any standard breadboard, and operates without external components.
For uncomplicated operation, the digital outputs of a microcontroller board are sufficient; those who want to use shift decoders will find suitable ICs in the standard range. A power supply with a capacity of at least 150 mA in multiplexing operation is required, while continuous operation of individual digits can draw up to 580 mA. The luminous intensity is sufficient for normally lit rooms; readability decreases in direct sunlight.
Safety information
This display is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes. Overdriving the LED segments through continuous load or current spikes significantly shortens their service life; it is recommended to use current-limiting resistors or a decoder with integrated current limiting. If anything is unclear, consult a qualified electrician before commissioning.
