Product description

A float switch is used for reliable detection of water levels in containers, tanks and open bodies of water. The device uses the buoyancy principle: as the water rises, the stainless steel float rises and actuates an integrated magnetic switch, which closes a contact.

The horizontal design is particularly suitable for applications with limited space or when the sensor surface is to be arranged parallel to the water surface. The normally open contact can be connected directly to 5 V logic of a microcontroller board, provided that the current consumption remains below 10 mA. For higher loads, a relay is used as an intermediate stage.

Typical applications include aquaponics systems for monitoring the fill level of nutrient tanks, automatic irrigation systems that are intended to switch off when there is insufficient water, and emergency systems in laboratories that need to report a change in water level. In model-making scenarios with water tanks, the sensor also enables simple, electronically controlled level monitoring without an external power supply for the sensor itself.

Operation requires only a voltage source between 0 and 5 V. The float reacts differently depending on the type of water; fresh water and brackish water are unproblematic, while salt water requires regular inspection and cleaning of the float.

This sensor is not designed for installation in domestic water pipes or operation under pressure. The float switch is intended exclusively for prototype development and for testing and demonstration purposes in laboratories, hobby projects and educational institutions.
