Product description
A water level sensor works on the principle of resistance and consists of a circuit board with parallel, exposed traces. Some of these traces are connected to the supply voltage, while the others are connected to the signal output. As long as no water is present, the traces remain electrically separated.
When water touches the sensor field, it connects adjacent traces and creates a variable resistance. The deeper the sensor is submerged, the more traces are bridged, the resistance decreases, and the voltage measurable at output S increases. The signal amplification on the board prepares this change. With a 5 V supply, this produces a value between 0 and 1023, which is read by the microcontroller's analog-to-digital converter.
The sensor is suitable for measuring fill levels in containers, detecting rain, detecting overflows, and monitoring for leaks. If a fixed threshold is set, the module also works as a simple yes/no water detector.
Since the traces can corrode over time when continuously powered while wet, the power supply should only be switched on shortly before a measurement, for example via a digital output pin on the microcontroller. An analog input on the target board is required.
Safety information
The sensor is designed only for detecting distilled or deionized water and does not work reliably with salt water or other conductive liquids. The module is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes; it is not intended for installation in household electrical circuits. Work on or near electrical installations must be carried out by qualified electricians; consult a qualified electrician before commissioning if in doubt.
