Product Description
A Peltier element uses the thermoelectric effect. When direct current flows through the semiconductor elements, temperature differences arise between the two ceramic surfaces. Depending on the current direction, one side is cooled and the other is heated. This element can generate temperature differences of up to 70 K when the heat-releasing side is effectively cooled.
At 12 V and a rated current of 15.4 A, the element provides 142 W of cooling capacity on the cold side. However, efficiency decreases as the maximum values are approached and as the temperature difference increases. Carefully designed heat dissipation on the hot side (for example, using heatsinks and fans) determines whether the desired temperature gradients can be achieved.
Applications include situations where compact active cooling or temperature control without moving parts is required. Portable coolers for beverages or medication, stabilization of sensor temperatures in laboratory setups, or small-format temperature chambers can be implemented with this element. Targeted heating by reversing the current direction is also possible.
A stabilized 12 V power supply with a capacity of at least 16 A is required (due to startup currents). Heat-transfer components such as copper blocks, thermal interface materials, and coolant circuits or fans are required for noticeable cooling effects. The element itself is mechanically fragile and must not be bent or twisted.
Safety Information
The Peltier element is not intended for connection to the household power grid and is exclusively designed for prototypes as well as testing and development purposes. Its high current consumption requires a safe power supply and wiring with suitable cross-sections; a qualified electrician should be consulted when dimensioning the system. Touching the cold side during operation can quickly cause frostbite, so protective measures are required.
