Product Description
This distance sensor uses a paired infrared transmitter and receiver to detect objects. The transmitter diode emits invisible infrared light, which is reflected by a surface in front of the sensor. The phototransistor receives this reflected light and changes its conductivity depending on the reflection intensity.
A comparator integrated on the circuit board converts the weak phototransistor signal into a digital TTL signal. The switching threshold can be adjusted precisely using the trimmer potentiometer to determine the reflection intensity at which the output switches. An LED visually indicates the current switching state.
The sensor distinguishes between strongly and weakly reflective surfaces and is therefore suitable for line-following robots that follow a black line on a light background. It also works for close-range object detection, for example, for obstacle detection or as a position sensor for rotating parts.
The module provides its digital signal directly to microcontroller inputs. Since it can be operated with both 3.3 V and 5 V systems, it is compatible with most common development boards. The detection distance of 2 to 40 cm limits its use to close-range applications; beyond this range, reflection detection is no longer reliable.
Safety Information
The module is intended exclusively for prototyping and testing and development purposes and is not suitable for installation in household power circuits. The infrared LED may cause eye damage when viewed through optical instruments or in the event of extreme overdrive; avoid direct exposure of the eyes. If you have questions about integrating it into larger systems or connecting it to the mains, consult a qualified electrician before commissioning.
