Product Description

The I2C multiplexer expands the addressability of I2C sensors on a microcontroller board. The chip provides eight independently switchable outputs and routes the data lines and clock signal to one active channel at a time. This allows multiple sensors with identical addresses to be operated in parallel, even though the bus normally requires unique addresses.

The operating voltage between 2.3 and 5.5 V allows direct connection to 3.3 V and 5 V boards without a level shifter. The host's I2C bus is passed through continuously, so other devices can also be powered on the same bus. Thanks to its very low standby current of less than 10 µA, the module is particularly suitable for battery-powered projects.

Applications arise wherever multiple identical sensors need to be read simultaneously. A room climate system with several temperature and humidity sensors at different locations can query each sensor through its own multiplexer channel without changing the address assignments. In robotics projects with multiple distance sensors or in IoT applications with distributed data collectors, the complex wiring required for alternative bus systems is eliminated.

A microcontroller or single-board computer with I2C master capability is required. The module does not require external capacitors, but does require SMD soldering equipment or a suitable adapter board. The channel load is limited by the I2C specification and the current-handling capability of the host master.
