Product Description
An RGB LED on a breakout board lets you create colored light signals in electronics projects. The module has three separate pins for the red, green, and blue color channels, which can be controlled independently via digital outputs. Pulse-width modulation (PWM) provides continuous brightness control for each channel.
The LED requires a 5 V operating voltage and draws up to 20 mA per color. Since current-limiting resistors are already integrated on the board, it can be connected directly to microcontroller pins without an additional protective resistor. Color mixing is additive: all three channels together produce white, while specific combinations can create up to 16.7 million shades.
The module is useful wherever status indicators or ambient lighting need to change color under program control. In alarm systems, red flashes indicate errors, while green light indicates normal operation. Temperature monitoring can be displayed visually with a gradient from blue through green to red. Art installations and interactive decorations can also use this simple lighting control.
A microcontroller with at least three available digital outputs is required, ideally with PWM capability for smooth brightness control. The board connects via three individual cables or connectors. No external power supply is needed, as the microcontroller itself provides the power. For signal quality reasons, connecting cables should be no longer than three meters.
