Product description
This electromagnetic relay with a 5 V coil voltage acts as a switch for higher current loads while providing galvanic isolation between the control circuit and the switched load. The JST-XH2.54 connector enables direct connection to microcontroller boards without soldering; the connector is mounted on three pins and carries the power supply as well as the signal lines for the coil and feedback.
The relay uses an electromagnetic coil to actuate a mechanical switch. When current flows through the 5 V coil, the magnet attracts an armature, connecting the common contact to one of the two outer contacts. This also makes it possible to switch loads when the board outputs themselves do not provide sufficient switching capability for high-quality control logic. To protect sensitive output stages, a flyback diode is essential to absorb the voltage spikes generated when the coil is switched off.
Typical applications include switching pumps and valves in water experiment setups, switching heating elements on and off in temperature controllers, or switching power sources in test and measurement circuits. The relay is also suitable for controlling electromagnets in mechanical experiments, for example to investigate magnetic fields. Rotating loads such as small DC motors can likewise be switched, provided their current consumption does not exceed the rated contact capacity.
Operation requires a 5 V power supply for the coil; this can be provided by the board or by a separate power source. A flyback diode (1N4007 or similar) must be connected in parallel with the coil, with the cathode connected to the positive pole of the coil power supply. The switched loads must not be operated on household mains and must be inspected by a qualified electrician if the intended application is unclear.
Safety information
This relay is not intended for installation in household electrical circuits and may only be used for prototyping as well as testing and development purposes. A flyback diode must always be connected in parallel with the coil to protect the electronics from voltage spikes. If you have questions about safe use, especially when working on electrical installations, consult a qualified electrician before commissioning.
