Product description
The camera module with an OV7670 sensor captures images at VGA resolution and connects to single-board computers or development boards via data and control lines. The sensor outputs digital RGB or YUV data in parallel, while the I2C interface handles register settings for exposure and color values. The 3.3 V logic requires a suitable level shifter if the board uses 5 V buffers.
The 640 * 480-pixel resolution is suitable for real-time image processing because the data volumes remain manageable. At typical distances of 30 to 50 cm, the 60-degree field of view still captures details across an area approximately 35 to 60 cm wide. In applications such as motion detection or simple object tracking, the processing load remains low enough on the microcontroller for live processing.
Specific areas of application include indoor robot navigation, where the sensor detects obstacles or markers, as well as inspection projects with a fixed camera that regularly documents patterns or changes in condition. Hobby applications such as simple motion detectors or image-buffered monitoring also work with this module.
In addition to the board, data bus management for the eight to ten parallel lines and drivers for I2C control are required. The sensor must be mounted on a stable mechanical bracket, as vibrations can noticeably reduce image quality. Code libraries for the OV7670 are available for common development environments, but may require considerable customization depending on the board.
