Product Description
The RAMPS control board is a shield for Arduino Mega 2560 microcontroller boards that coordinates the electronics of a 3D printer. It distributes control signals to stepper motors for the X, Y, and Z axes as well as up to five additional extruders, monitors temperatures at the print head and heated bed using thermistors or PT100 sensors, and regulates the power supply to heated beds and fans. The board works with standard driver boards (A4988, DRV8825, or similar), which are inserted into the designated slots.
The board reads print files from an SD card, eliminating the need for a connection to a PC during printing. At the same time, temperature control runs continuously: sensors measure temperatures continuously, and the electronics heats as needed. This architecture makes it possible to operate multiple print heads in sequence or side by side. In addition to the Arduino Mega 2560, operation requires power supplies for the motors (typically 12 or 24 V) and the heated bed (a separate power source with higher current capacity), several driver boards for the motors, and the corresponding sensors.
Applications include single-product printers with a smaller build platform, multi-material systems with several extruders (for example, for using different types of plastic or printing support material), and printers with multiple independent print heads. Broad support from open-source firmware such as Marlin and Repetier-Firmware enables customization for customer-specific geometries.
The board requires an Arduino Mega 2560 as its base, a correctly sized power supply (separate sources for the motors and heated bed), a USB cable for programming and flashing the firmware, driver boards depending on the number of motors, and the desired sensors. Correct polarity for all connections is essential during assembly. The maximum current load must never be exceeded.
Safety Notice
Incorrect polarity in the power supply or at the motor connections can cause irreversible damage to the electronics. This board is intended exclusively for the construction and commissioning of 3D printer prototypes and for testing and development purposes; it is not suitable for installation in stationary or permanently wired systems. If you have questions about the overall electrical system or power supply sizing, consult a qualified electrician before commissioning.
