Product description
This temperature sensor IC works with thermocouples and digitizes their readings for microcontrollers. Thanks to integrated cold-junction compensation, no additional reference measurement is required at the terminal block. The sensor can therefore directly measure temperatures of up to 800 °C.
The data is transmitted via the SPI bus. The protocol requires only three lines (chip select, clock, data), allowing the IC to be operated with boards using 3.3 V logic without level shifting, and it also works with 5 V systems. New measurements are available approximately every 220 milliseconds.
Applications include industrial furnaces, melting pots, or laboratory applications where standard temperature sensors reach their limits. The sensor can also be used in projects to monitor process temperatures in high-temperature experiments.
A power supply between 3.3 and 5.5 V and a type K, J, or other standard thermocouple with the appropriate pin assignment are required. The correct thermocouple polarity must be observed during connection, as the sensor does not correct reverse polarity. Typical microcontroller boards provide enough SPI pins for operation.
Safety notice
When working on or immediately next to the thermocouple, burns must be prevented; the connection area can become very hot during operation. The device is intended exclusively for prototyping, testing, and development purposes and is not suitable for installation in household electrical circuits. If you have questions about integrating it into larger systems, consult a qualified electrician.
