Product description
This converter translates signals between the classic RS-232 interface of older devices and the TTL logic of modern microcontroller boards. The MAX3232 IC handles voltage conversion in both directions and operates with either 3.3 V or 5 V operating voltage, depending on the version.
The converter solves a central compatibility problem: RS-232 devices use voltage levels between minus 12 V and plus 12 V, while microcontrollers operate with 0 to 3.3 V or 0 to 5 V. A direct connection would damage the inputs. The module safely converts the signals between the two systems, without requiring you to build your own level shifters or voltage dividers.
Typical applications include communication with older industrial devices, measuring instruments with serial interfaces, or legacy computers. If you need to connect a modern board to classic peripherals, this module saves development time and troubleshooting effort. It also provides reliable service when debugging embedded systems via serial consoles.
Before operation, check which operating voltage the version requires to ensure that the connections and connected boards are compatible. The power supply and signal lines must be connected according to the module labeling.
Safety information
RS-232 levels must not be connected directly to microcontroller inputs; conversion using the IC is essential. The module is intended exclusively for prototyping and testing and development purposes and is not suitable for installation in household electrical circuits. When working on or near electrical systems, consult a qualified electrician if in doubt.
