Product description
This LED ring contains multiple addressable light-emitting diodes that can be individually controlled in terms of color and brightness. Each LED has an integrated circuit, so no additional driver is required. A microcontroller board sends commands via a single data pin, using only a few pins.
The LEDs can mix red, green, and blue values to produce any color. The control timing is critical because commands must be transmitted in real time with precisely spaced pulses. Many development environments provide ready-made libraries that handle these details.
The ring requires a stable 5-volt power supply. Power consumption can be considerable, especially when all LEDs are operated at maximum brightness. The power source should therefore be adequately sized. Multiple rings can be connected in series by connecting the data output of one to the data input of the next.
Applications include ambient lighting for desktop setups, orientation lighting for robotics projects, colored status feedback in enclosures, and decorative elements in prototypes. For example, a machine's status ring can be programmed to glow green when everything is ready and flash yellow or red when problems occur.
A suitable development board with GPIO connections, a library for controlling the LEDs in the programming environment used, and an external power supply with sufficient current capacity are required. The data protocol is susceptible to interference, so short connection paths and a clean power supply are important.
Safety information
The ring is intended exclusively for prototyping and development purposes and is not suitable for connection to household mains wiring. When controlling it via a microcontroller board, ensure that the voltage levels are correct, especially if the board uses a supply voltage other than 5 V. Observe the maximum current limits of the board and power supply used.
