Product Description
The L293D is a four-channel motor driver IC that directly controls DC motors, stepper motors, and other inductive loads. The component is suitable for prototypes and educational projects in which several motors are to be operated in parallel.
The IC uses two H-bridge circuits per channel. Each output supplies up to 600 mA and supports motor voltages of up to 36 V. The logic itself operates at 5 V and accepts standard and CMOS signals at its inputs. Integrated protection diodes suppress back EMF generated when motors are switched off. PWM signals on the enable pins enable continuous speed control.
The four channels operate independently, allowing motors with different directions and speeds to run in parallel. Typical applications include driverless model vehicles with two or four wheels, robot platforms with multiple drives, conveyor belt controls, or experimental setups for studying motion sequences. One example would be building a two-wheeled robot in which each side is controlled through a separate channel, enabling cornering.
The IC is plugged into a breadboard and requires two power sources: 5 V for the logic and a separate supply for the motor load (2 to 36 V, depending on the motors used). Control is provided through the digital outputs of a microcontroller board. For motor currents above 600 mA per channel or higher voltages, a different driver model must be used.
Safety Information
The component is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes and is not suitable for installation in household electrical circuits. Ensure that the supply voltages are connected with the correct polarity and that sufficient cooling surfaces are provided during prolonged operation at high currents. If you have questions about commissioning, consult a qualified electrician.
