Product Description
This two-axis joystick potentiometer detects lever deflections as analog voltage values. Two independent 5-kOhm resistors function as voltage dividers and provide an output voltage between ground and the supply voltage for the X and Y directions, respectively. The resolution depends on the resolution of the analog input on the connected microcontroller; a 10-bit ADC detects 1024 different positions per axis.
The potentiometer requires a supply voltage, typically between 3.3 V and 5 V. The two analog outputs are connected directly to ADC inputs on the controller. A mechanical push-button switch is integrated into the joystick base and signals a press to a digital input. For applications with a supply voltage below 5 V, compatibility with common development boards is maintained.
Applications include joystick-controlled robots, where two-axis movements are specified via wireless remote control. The potentiometer is also used in machine control panels for cranes, manipulators, or mobile work equipment. Prototype controls for drones or remote-controlled vehicles use the module as an input device. Gaming controllers, arcade machines, and industrial control panels use similar components for real-time inputs.
An analog output signal always requires an analog-to-digital converter at the receiver. The mechanical contacts are subject to wear; joystick potentiometers typically withstand 100,000 to 1,000,000 actuation cycles. For precise positioning, digital joystick modules with separate sensors may offer advantages in some cases, but they are used less frequently in simple control circuits.
Safety Information
The potentiometer is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes and is not suitable for installation in household power circuits. Avoid moisture and contamination to prevent contact problems. If you have questions about commissioning or electrical connections, consult a qualified electrician.
