Product description
This optical heart rate sensor detects the pulsation of blood through reflected light and converts it into electrical signals. Measurement takes place continuously as soon as the sensor is attached to a well-perfused area of skin, ideally the finger, ear, or wrist.
The system uses an integrated LED and light sensor. The sensor signal is output as an analog voltage signal between 0 and 5 V, which can be connected directly to a microcontroller's analog-to-digital converter. The resolution depends on the ADC used; 10-bit resolution provides sufficient steps for reliable pulse detection.
The measurement range of 40 to 150 beats per minute covers resting, everyday, and moderate activity levels. The sensor is not suitable for maximum athletic exertion with higher pulse rates or high-performance medical applications. Typical applications include fitness trackers, real-time pulse measurement in educational and prototype projects, health monitoring systems, and biofeedback-based applications.
The sensor requires a stable 5 V power supply. When connected to 3.3 V systems, a level shifter is required for the digital output signal, or the analog output must be adjusted using a voltage divider. For reliable measurements, the sensor must be pressed firmly against the skin; loose contact leads to signal noise or measurement failures.
Safety notice
This module is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes and is not suitable for integration into medical devices. The sensor must not be sterilized, decontaminated, or used for long-term implantation. When handling electronic components, observe antistatic protection measures to prevent damage from electrostatic discharge.
