Product description
The expansion module adds an Ethernet interface to microcontrollers and enables communication with local networks or the Internet. The W5100 chipset handles all TCP/IP processing, so the microcontroller only needs to issue a few commands. Data rates of up to 10 Mbit/s are supported.
The SPI interface connects the module to the host system; several digital pins control chip-select and interrupt signals. A 16 kB buffer stores incoming and outgoing data. This memory is the limiting factor in applications involving larger volumes of data or several simultaneous connections. The RJ45 socket accepts a network cable and connects it to the chipset via an integrated transformer.
The module requires a stable 5 V power supply and fits directly onto Arduino boards with the standard connector format. The SPI pins must not be assigned twice. An existing local network with a DHCP server simplifies address assignment; static IP configuration is also possible. Larger volumes of data or streaming applications are limited by the buffer size.
