Product Description
This magnetometer measures the strength and direction of the Earth's magnetic field, allowing a project's current orientation in space to be determined. The QMC5883 sensor uses the magnetoresistive measurement principle: changes in the magnetic field alter the sensor's resistance, producing digital coordinates along three axes. Because the measurement signal is transmitted via I2C, the module requires only two communication lines; in addition to the power supply, multiple sensors can be connected to the same bus simultaneously.
The measurement range of ±8 gauss is sufficient for navigation and orientation detection. The resolution of 1 milligauss per digit enables precise angular measurements. During installation, note that magnetic fields from live cables, ferromagnetic metals, or other electronic components can affect the measurement. Sufficient distance and software calibration can compensate for such interference. The 3.3 V operating voltage requires a level shifter when connecting to 5 V boards.
The module is suitable for robots and other mobile systems that need to determine their orientation, as well as for glove or head tracking in motion projects. A quadcopter can use it to detect its current flight direction and make course corrections. The sensor can also be used to detect the horizon position in inclinometers. Its compact design allows installation in confined spaces.
Commissioning requires a microcontroller board with an I2C interface and the corresponding control software. The sensor is powered by 3.3 V; 5 V systems require a level shifter on the data lines or a compatible board with integrated level conversion.
Safety Notice
The module is not intended for installation in household electrical circuits and is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes. The 3.3 V operating voltage must not be exceeded to prevent damage. If anything is unclear before commissioning, consult a qualified electrician.
