Product Description
A color sensor on a breakout board detects colors and grayscale levels in its surroundings. The module captures the intensity of the red, green, and blue components of incoming light and outputs the brightness value. This makes it possible not only to distinguish between different colors, but also to detect changes in brightness.
The sensor uses I2C communication, allowing multiple modules to operate on the same data bus and thereby saving connections on the microcontroller. The 3.3 V operating voltage requires a level shifter for the signal lines when connecting to 5 V boards. The breakout board also provides digital outputs that function as comparators, allowing the sensor to be used directly as a switch without the microcontroller having to be queried each time.
Typical applications include sorting objects identified by color, for example distinguishing white, black, or colored building blocks in robotics projects. The sensor is also suitable as a brightness meter in ambient light sensors or for detecting color markings on paths. However, the measurement only works in the visible spectrum and with sufficient illumination.
Operation requires a microcontroller or board with I2C support as well as connection cables. Accuracy depends on the lighting conditions and can be improved by calibrating against known color references.
Safety Information
The sensor is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes and is not suitable for installation in household electrical circuits. When wiring, ensure the correct 3.3 V power supply and use a level shifter for 5 V logic systems. If you are unsure about commissioning the device, consult a qualified electrician.
