Product description
This Wi-Fi module connects microcontroller boards wirelessly to networks and the Internet. It operates at 3.3 volts, so a power supply must be sourced separately. When connecting it to 5-volt boards, a level shifter is required to adjust the logic levels.
The module communicates with the connected board via a serial interface. Sketches can control it using AT commands or use special libraries to access Wi-Fi directly from Arduino code. This eliminates the need for a separate network board, saving space and GPIO pins.
The integrated microcontroller independently handles network protocols and can also be programmed as a standalone unit. This allows for on-site automation without keeping the main controller switched on. Typical applications include humidity and temperature loggers with cloud connectivity, networked home automation, remote monitoring stations, and IoT projects with multiple distributed sensors.
In addition to the level shifter, operation requires a 3.3-volt power supply rated for at least 0.5 amps, antenna connections, and libraries or knowledge of AT commands. The IEEE 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi standard and range are comparable to those of typical Wi-Fi routers, though obstacles significantly reduce the range.
