Product description
A real-time clock module with a DS3231 chip provides the exact system time even when the Raspberry Pi is switched off or there is no Internet connection. The I2C bus requires only two data lines and shares them with other modules that also use I2C, keeping the number of required pins low.
The module works independently of the Internet and keeps time using an integrated battery controlled by the quartz oscillator. After power outages, the current time does not need to be entered again, which is particularly useful for projects without a network connection or in remote applications. The internal temperature sensor also allows the current ambient temperature to be read via the same I2C interface.
Applications range from data loggers that store timestamps offline to IoT devices designed to operate without external time synchronization. Automation projects with time-controlled processes also benefit from the fact that the scheduled action is not skipped when the network connection is interrupted. Simple weather stations can also use the module to assign precise timestamps to their measurements.
The quartz oscillator maintains a maximum deviation of two millionths of a second per second, which under real-world conditions corresponds to an error of about two seconds per million seconds of operating time. The CR2032 battery generally lasts several years before it needs to be replaced. Connection is made via the four lines 5 V, GND, SDA, and SCL; the module supports both 3.3 V and 5 V logic levels and can be connected directly to Raspberry Pi GPIO pins.
Safety notice
This module is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes. The CR2032 battery must not be short-circuited, soldered, or damaged. Do not install it in a household electrical circuit.
