Product description
The real-time clock with I2C connection provides single-board computers such as the Raspberry Pi with precise time and date, even when the system is switched off. The module also measures temperature and humidity. Without such a real-time clock, systems without Internet access have to request the time again every time they start up or lose it completely.
The sensor uses the DS1307 IC and features a permanently installed backup battery that maintains the system date while the power supply is interrupted. The I2C protocol connects the module to the host using just two data lines (SDA and SCL). The operating voltage of 3.3 V to 5 V is compatible with common systems without a level shifter; in mixed-voltage setups with multiple voltages, an adjustment may be required depending on the available logic levels.
The module is used in data logger projects where measured values are saved with a timestamp. It can also be used to implement timer programs for IoT devices, digital timer functions, or simply an accurate system time for logging without a network connection. In autonomous measuring stations, the real-time clock operates completely independently of the Internet.
For operation, the system must support I2C communication and provide the appropriate software libraries. Verifying write operations for the date is recommended, as these values may shift during extended storage without recharging the backup battery.
Safety information
The module is intended exclusively for prototype construction as well as testing and development purposes and is not designed for installation in household electrical circuits or permanent device integration. The backup battery must not be short-circuited and complies with the requirements for lithium batteries. Work on or near electrical installations is reserved for qualified electricians; if you are unsure about integrating the module into existing electrical circuits, consult a qualified electrician before commissioning.
