Product description
The BH1750 light sensor detects ambient brightness via a digital I2C bus. The IC responds to a request with a measured value between 1 and 65535 lux, which is sufficient for measurements ranging from moonlight to direct sunlight. The resolution allows differences below 1 lux to be detected, for example, to identify twilight conditions.
Light reaches a photosensor and is converted into an electronic signal; an integrated amplifier processes the signal and outputs it as a digital value. Two different measurement modes allow you to balance speed and accuracy: the fast measurement provides a result in approximately 16 milliseconds, while the accurate measurement takes approximately 180 milliseconds. Two selectable I2C addresses eliminate the need for an additional switching pin when multiple sensors are connected to one bus.
In practice, the sensor can replace manual light-level values in camera automation, adjust the brightness of LED lights according to the time of day or room conditions, or detect whether it is currently daylight at a weather station. Illuminance levels indoors are typically between 50 and 500 lux, so the sensor provides good resolution in this range.
The operating voltage must be between 2.4 and 3.6 volts; connection to 5 V systems therefore requires a level shifter for the I2C bus. The sensor has no internal calibration and is calibrated at the factory; production-related deviations can reach +- 15 percent. Operation requires only the power supply and the I2C connection to the mainboard.
Safety information
The sensor is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes and is not designed for installation in household mains circuits. Observe the operating voltage range of 2.4 to 3.6 volts and the required level shifting when operating with 5 V logic systems.
