Product description

Carbon film potentiometers are used wherever variable resistances need to be adjusted directly by the user. This set includes six ready-to-use components with a 10 kOhm nominal resistance and a corresponding cap. The linear output curve enables simple proportional control without nonlinearity correction.

Each potentiometer has three connection wires: two outer pins for the power supply and a middle pin for the output signal. The rotary control changes the voltage divider, allowing an analog control signal from zero to the supply voltage to be tapped. The standard 6 mm diameter shaft fits common knob caps and can also be mounted directly in enclosures.

Applications range from brightness control for LED groups and volume controls in audio circuits to manually adjusting thresholds in sensor systems. A typical example is setting the sensitivity of a motion detector, where the potentiometer would define the reference voltage level. Such a control element also determines frequency or amplitude in simple generators and oscillators.

When used with microcontroller boards, the middle connection is connected to an analog input; many common boards have enough ADC channels for several potentiometers in parallel. Contacts affected by dirt should be cleaned occasionally, as carbon film types are more prone to wear than wire-wound potentiometers.
