Product description
This expansion module adds two industrial interfaces, RS485 and CAN, to a single-board computer. Instead of proprietary connections, it enables networks based on established standards that communicate reliably over longer distances and in electrically noisy environments. The module plugs into the standard pin headers and can be stacked multiple times.
RS485 is suitable for communication between up to 32 devices over a shared line, while CAN is designed for systems that require bandwidth and determinism. Galvanic isolation of both channels from the host protects the computer from voltage spikes on the connected lines. CAN termination can be enabled as needed using a jumper to dampen reflections at the end of the line.
Typical applications include sensor and actuator networks in building automation, where multiple temperature or light sensors send their readings to a central unit via RS485, or vehicle-based data loggers that read vehicle network information via CAN. The module can also function as a gateway between a local measurement bus and a cloud connection if the computer is programmed accordingly.
The GPIO pins of the single-board computer must be available for a driver or kernel module. Connections to RS485 and CAN are made via screw terminals; external wiring must be planned separately. Cables for field devices are not included.
Safety information
This module is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes. Work on or near electrical installations is reserved for qualified electricians. If you are unsure about the correct configuration or safe operation in a specific environment, consult a qualified electrician before commissioning.
