Product Description
Red light-emitting diodes in a standard 5 mm package are suitable for visible indicators, display arrays, and simple optical signaling applications. The semiconductor's light-emitting layer produces red light in the wavelength range of 620–625 nm, which the eye can still clearly perceive even under unfavorable lighting conditions.
With a power supply of typically 20 mA per LED, the forward voltage is around 2 V. A series resistor is therefore included in a circuit to protect the power source from overloading; the required value depends on the operating voltage of the entire system. The LEDs can be combined in series, parallel, or mixed circuits, depending on the desired brightness distribution and current consumption.
Projects with microcontroller boards can use them as status lights for operating states, while numerical or graphical display arrays can be created using multiplexing technology, along with optical warning signals. Test setups use red LEDs for visual fault diagnosis. Simple transistor driver modules can also be used to meet higher brightness requirements.
At the same time, the average service life is 100,000 operating hours, so the LED is also economical for continuous operation. The light-emitting diodes are supplied in bulk, without special sorting or wiring, making inventory management advisable for larger assembly tasks.
Safety Information
Red light-emitting diodes are intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes. They are not approved for installation in household power circuits or safety warning and signaling systems where specific approvals are required. During continuous operation at high current density, monitor heat generation and provide cooling or reduce the current if necessary.
