Product Description
An LED volume indicator visually displays the loudness of an audio signal by converting input voltages into ten levels. The LM3915 comparator IC compares the amplified input signal with internally generated threshold values and activates the corresponding LED. The louder the signal, the more LEDs light up.
The audio signal is processed by the input amplifier and its level can be adjusted using the level control, so that even longer audio passages can be reliably detected. A frequency-selective circuit at the input reduces interference signals and improves readability. The measurement range extends over approximately 90 dB.
In laboratory use, the circuit can be used to acoustically characterize amplifiers or loudspeaker prototypes without a separate measuring instrument. The indicator can also be used to adjust microphone preamplifiers or monitor recording levels. For operation and debugging, all that is needed is a stable 9-to-15-V power supply.
The circuit is assembled on a breadboard or perfboard. It is not supplied pre-soldered or with a finished PCB layout; only the components and the circuit diagram for the soldering exercise are included. The audio signal is connected to the input from the output of a mixing console, sound card, or function generator.
