Product description
This communication module connects microcontroller projects to mobile networks and satellite navigation. The module combines three functions: GSM for voice and SMS, GPRS for data transmission, and GPS for real-time positioning. The module operates with 5-volt logic and connects via a serial interface, compatible with common Arduino-compatible boards and other development boards with UART connections.
The module requires an active SIM card with an enabled data plan for GSM and GPRS, while GPS works without a SIM card. The GPS position is determined with an accuracy of approximately ten meters, which is sufficient for many tracking and navigation applications. Communication takes place via AT commands sent by the microcontroller. The external antenna significantly improves reception and should be attached during setup.
Applications range from GPS loggers for vehicles or hikes and alarm systems with SMS notifications to IoT sensors that transmit measurement data via mobile networks. Remote control of devices via SMS is also possible. A typical application is a vehicle tracking device that sends position data to the internet and triggers motion alarms via SMS.
Operation requires a power supply module capable of handling the module's current peaks; additional battery buffering may be useful. Communication with the mobile network is subject to the SIM card provider's charges, and signal availability depends on local network coverage. For projects with critical GPS accuracy or connection reliability requirements, these limitations should be checked before starting the project.
