Description

The ROBOTIS OP3 is a very popular development platform for a broad range of applications. Thanks to its comprehensive ROS support (Robot Operating System), the OP3 can be used for extensive research in machine learning, AI, SLAM, navigation, and much more.

  • SLAM / Navigation (Cartography)
  • HRI / Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence (Self-Learning Systems)
  • Vision Processing / Teleoperation / Network / Walking (Human-Machine Collaboration)

Robot Operating System (ROS)

As already mentioned, a wide range of nodes is already available for the OP3 to shorten the familiarization period and increase productivity. The documentation for all components used is very extensive, so each component can be individually adapted and used in software. The previously created "robot profiles" (XML files) allow visualization in various simulation programs, such as RVIZ or Gazebo, within a very short time.

Hardware

When selecting the hardware, the highest possible level of reliability and user-friendliness was prioritized, which is why only components from renowned manufacturers were used. The mechanics and control components come from ROBOTIS; only the camera and development board were sourced from an Intel NUC with an i3 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and an SSD. The 20 degrees of freedom are provided by DYNAMIXEL XM430-W350-R servo motors, which are characterized by high torque despite their high positioning speeds. The servo controller board is an OpenCR with a Cortex M7 CPU, magnetic field sensor, accelerometer, and gyroscope.

The complete documentation, including information on initial commissioning and much more, can be viewed HERE.

Here is the summary of the changes.

  • SBC Upgrade: Upgrading from a NUC 7th generation i3 to a NUC 10th generation i3.
  • Battery Upgrade: Upgrading from an 1800mAh to a 3300mAh battery. Please note that this is still under testing and not finalized.
  • For software, we are considering the following improvements:
  • ROS2 Support: Implementing support for the ROS2 framework.
  • Balance Control and Walking Improvements: Enhancing the robot's balance and walking capabilities.
  • Ball Detection Improvements: Improving the robot's ability to detect balls.
  • Additional Simulator Support: Expanding simulator support beyond Gazebo to include Webots and Mujoco.
  • We are also exploring the possibility of supporting NVIDIA Isaac simulation.
  • Please note that these plans are subject to change as development progresses.
  • Confirmed: Upgrading from NUC 7 i3 to NUC 10 i3.
  • Subject to Change: Other software improvements and battery-related changes
