Product Description
The PIR motion sensor detects changes in infrared radiation caused by the body heat of humans or animals. A fitted plastic lens focuses the infrared radiation onto the sensor element, and circuitry on the board converts the analog signal into a digital signal that can be read directly by a microcontroller. This eliminates the need for any additional signal processing.
The operating voltage between 3.3 V and 15 V allows connection to nearly all common development boards without a level shifter. After being switched on, the module briefly outputs a high signal before entering monitoring mode. In the default state, the output remains high for a short time after motion is detected before returning low, but this can be adjusted using resistors on the board.
The extremely low quiescent current of 20 µA makes the module ideal for battery-powered projects and applications with limited space. It is typically used in automatic lighting, simple alarm and security systems, and access control systems. During installation, keep in mind that the module may also incorrectly interpret direct sunlight or warm air currents as motion, so it requires suitable positioning. The three pins can be connected directly to a breadboard or microcontroller.
