Product description
A passive piezo buzzer module produces tones only when externally driven with an alternating electrical signal. Without this signal, it remains silent. This distinguishes it from active buzzers, which have their own oscillator and output a fixed tone independently. Here, a square-wave signal must be provided that switches rapidly between two voltage levels, thereby determining the pitch.
The module has three connection pins spaced 2.54 mm apart. The pin labeled S receives the control signal, while the minus pin provides the ground connection. The middle pin is not connected to the circuit and remains unused. Therefore, only two of the three pins are required for operation.
Different control frequencies produce different pitches. The module operates with voltages between 3 and 5 V, with the highest volume occurring near the resonance frequency of around 2 kHz. A microcontroller generates the required square-wave signal, for example via a PWM function with an adjustable frequency, making it possible to create simple melodies, variable alarm tones, or acoustic feedback when buttons are pressed or sensors detect events.
Because the module requires a control signal, a microcontroller board is necessary. Control is provided via a digital output or a PWM pin, depending on whether a simple on-off signal is sufficient or variable pitches are desired.
