Product description
A passive heatsink for single-board computers uses an increased surface area to transfer heat into the surrounding environment. During continuous data processing or at increased clock frequencies, the processor temperature can rise rapidly without thermal management, leading to throttling or failures. The heatsink distributes this heat across the broad surface of the aluminum fins, typically reducing the system temperature by 10 to 20 degrees Celsius.
Installation is carried out directly on the processor chip using a thermal interface material. Aluminum provides high thermal conductivity without requiring fans or a power supply. Cooling performance depends on the ambient temperature and air circulation, but in well-ventilated enclosures or with open mounting, it is sufficient for most standard applications.
Common applications include media servers performing video transcoding during operation, surveillance systems with continuous image processing, and long-term scientific measurements where thermal throttling would distort the results. Project setups with increased clock frequencies also benefit from the additional cooling capacity.
For proper operation, a suitable thermal pad or thermal paste is required unless one is already included. Depending on the enclosure design, installation may be restricted by the heatsink profile or require additional space. Effectiveness decreases significantly when there is no airflow at all or when the device is operated in a closed, warm enclosure without ventilation.
Safety information
The heatsink is used as an accessory for prototype and test setups. Work on or near electrical installations is reserved for qualified electricians; if anything is unclear, consult a qualified electrician before commissioning.
