Product description
The flame sensor detects infrared radiation in the spectral range between 760 and 1100 nanometers and is suitable for detecting open flames and embers. The sensor IC uses a photodiode array that specifically responds to the characteristic radiation of fire, largely filtering out interfering light such as sunlight or LED lighting. If you want to connect your flame sensor to 5 V logic, for example to common microcontroller boards, install a 150-Ω resistor in series as a current limiter. Depending on the selected variant, the module outputs the measured value as an analog voltage or via a digital threshold.
A lens in front of the photodiode array focuses the radiation and limits the viewing angle, typically to approximately 60 degrees. This enables targeted detection without interference from ambient light. The sensor reliably detects flames up to approximately 100 centimeters away with a direct line of sight. Flames behind or concealed by objects, such as behind glass or walls, are no longer detected.
In practical use, the flame sensor warns of fires in ovens or burners in educational experiment kits, for example when using a gas burner in a school experiment. Open fires in safety systems, such as a monitored candleholder or grill, can also be reliably detected. The sensor is sufficiently sensitive for firefighting robots or automated fire suppression.
Since the module operates on direct current, operation on AC mains requires a separate DC power supply. A 5 V laboratory power supply or the power supply of a microcontroller board is sufficient. For analog output, a simple RC filter can be used to suppress high-frequency interference, but it is usually not necessary.
Safety notice
The flame sensor is intended exclusively for building prototypes and for testing and development purposes. It is not suitable for installation in household electrical systems or as a functional safety component in fire alarm systems. Work on or near electrical installations must be carried out by qualified electricians; if you are unsure about the power supply or integration into existing circuits, consult a qualified electrician before commissioning. Flames may only be used under supervision and in compliance with the fire safety regulations at the test location.
